Ford Focus and C Max Electronic Parking

Ford Focus and C Max Electronic Parking Brake (EPB)

The electronic parking brake replaces the conventional handbrake. It is operated by a switch in the centre console. The Electric Parking Brake provides the following benefits over the conventional handbrake:

Ease of use-the parking brake can be applied fully regardless of the strength of the driver.

Safety- the electric parking brake applies automatically when the key is removed from the ignition (depending on country).

Always apply the parking brake and select first or reverse gear before leaving the vehicle.

To Apply the Electric Parking Brake

Pull up the switch once to apply the Electric Parking Brake. The Brake system warning light will illuminate in the cluster to confirm that the parking brake is now applied.

The Brake system warning light in the cluster will remain illuminated for a short period if the ignition is turned to position or the key is removed.

If your vehicle is parked on a hill and facing uphill, select first gear and turn the steering away from the kerb.

If your vehicle is parked on a hill and facing downhill, select reverse gear and turn the steering towards the kerb.

Vehicles with Durashift CVT transmission (automatic) should always be left with the selector in position P.

Automatic application of the Electronic Parking Brake

The Electric Parking Brake will apply automatically when the key is removed from the ignition (depending on country).

Note: after switching off the ignition wait for at least one second with the key in position O. If you remove the key immediately the Electric Parking Brake may not apply automatically.

Note: if the ignition key is turned to position  O but not removed from the ignition for 10 minutes or longer, the electric parking brake will not apply automatically when the key is removed from the ignition.

If the drivers door is opened before the Electronic Parking Brake is applied, a chime will sound and EPB (!) IS NOT YET APPLIED will appear in the Message Centre display. Apply the Electric Parking Brake.

To prevent the electric parking brake being applied automatically when the key is removed from the ignition, press and hold down the handbrake switch while the ignition key is switched off or removing the key from the ignition.

! Take care not to leave the vehicle with the Electric Parking Brake not applied.

Remember that if you press down the switch while removing the key from the ignition, the parking brake will not be applied.

! Ensure that the vehicle’s wheels are securely wedged if parking the vehicle with the Electric Parking Brake released to prevent it from rolling away.

Application of the parking brake when the vehicle is moving.

! With the exception of emergency conditions the electronic parking brake should not be applied while the vehicle is moving.

If the Electric Parking Brake is applied while the vehicle is moving, the Brake system warning light in the cluster will illuminate and a warning chime will sound.

There are two modes of Electric Parking Brake operation dependent on vehicle speed:

At speeds up to 2 ½ mph (4km/h), pulling up the switch will apply the parking brake at full force.

At speeds above 2 ½ mph (4 km/h), the braking force increases gradually as long as the switch is held in the pulled up-position, beginning with moderate braking force and building up to full braking force. The parking brake will be applied until the switch is released or pressed down, or the vehicle comes to a standstill.

To release the electric parking brake.

The ignition must be in position II.

Note: The brake system warning light in the cluster will extinguish to confirm that the parking brake has been released.

Note: if the Electric Parking Brake is still applied when the vehicle moves off, a warning chime will sound and EPB (!) STILL APPLIED will appear in the Message Centre Display. Release the Electric Parking Brake.

Cut in the power supply.

! You may not be able to apply or remove the Electric Parking Brake if there is a cut in the power supply or flat battery, failure of the alternator or vehicle electronics.

In the case of a cut in the power supply, the ignition warning light will illuminate in the cluster and LIMITED EPB (!) FUNCTION will appear in the Message Centre display. Have the system checked by an expert.

The electric parking brake can be released manually

Emergency Parking Brake release.

If the Electronic Parking Brake is not functioning it can be released manually.

! Operate the emergency release only if the vehicle is secured against rolling away.

Open the upper level of the centre console and then raise the second level of the console.

Hook up the floor of the centre console with a screw driver.

Unclip the Release “T” handle from its resting place on the floor of the vehicle.

Pull the “T” handle upwards until a noise is heard.

The parking brake is now released.
